I have no idea what this is/was, but it's cool.

This was on the door of an old Victorian house undergoing renovation, just down the street from my sister's house. No idea if it's new or original to the house, but it's got a cool architectural steampunk vibe. Any of my architect/engineer readers know?

It looks like parts remaining from a twist doorbell.

The remains of a handcrank doorbell?

That is correct, it's the base for a hand crank doorbell. We had one on our door when I was a kid and when you turn the little key handle on the outside the bell would ring on the inside. Sounded like a bike bell kind of.

Here's a link to a picture of one http://hardwareaisle.thisoldhouse.com/2008/09/hand-crank-door.html

Very cool! I knew my readers would come through. Thanks for shedding some light on this Seussian contraption!

Neat photo - I've never seen anything like that before. Glad your readers were able to help you out with identifying it. :)

Just wanted to say thanks so much for stopping by to leave a comment on my blog. Friday was terribly hard, and today it is finally sinking in that she is gone. It hurts so much. I am so sorry to hear about your Maddy Kitteh. Our animals are our family and we love them more than words can express. We are lucky to have these special experiences with them, aren't we?
Thank you again for your kindness.

I thought it was a steampunk brooch. Or an old-fashioned nipple twister.
