Myrtle Mae Monday 03.30.09 --Another guest post and a call to our joint readers

Nothing inspires flight from pudgy barnyard fowl like a coop based on Saarinen's TWA Terminal at JFK International--there's even one perched on top!  Never has cast-in place concrete soared like this, and just think how sturdy this structure will be during a hailstorm.  There's no limit on how many eggs you can have, my feathered ladies; just make sure they can be safely stowed all the way under the nest in front of you. Miss Kitty will be coming through the cabin to take your seed orders shortly!

Sadly, this are all the MMM sketches I have so far.  I was going to make some more today, but I awoke with a wicked, stomach-churning hangover (haven't had one of those in years) after Guy and I went to dinner with one of the contractors I worked with on Wheatlands and her husband last night.  So, I'm finally feeling decent enough to sit up at a computer and do this post, but I'm low on ideas for the next MMM starchitects coop sketches.  I mean, it's so easy to just go "Frank Lloyd Wright" and be done, but come on, thou literate and thoughtful readers.  What other kinds of coops do you want to see?  What other styles?  What other starchitects shall we skewer/honor/patronize?  Tell us in the comments!

Art Deco?

Craftsman?

I still vote for a Wright/craftsman coop. And an Art Deco/1920s Miami-style coop would be awesome.

Didn't you say something about a Liebskind coop? "It's two chickens, going for a walk."

How about something built only from scrap materials/scavenged goods?

How about Gothic Revival or something that looks like it belongs in a LA bayou... like a voodoo shack?

I like designing a chicken coop after the TWA Terminal, which evokes the sensation of flying. I think the only time I've seen a chicken fly was when one was thrown out of the ring during a cock fight (and it's the only time I've seen a chicken beat another chicken with a chair).

Besides incorporating contemporary architectural styles to express the coolness of chicken coops maybe you can implement historical styles to show the history of the chicken coop. You can have a cave chicken coop, Stonehenge, Greek, Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, etc.

I think you should do "Coops of the world" in the style of things like Seattle's Space Needle, The Chrystler Building, The Colleseum, Taj Ma Coop, etc...

must education the feathers.

Bypass Wright for Sullivan. I'd love to see decorative details.

The TWA terminal is an inspired idea.

I love the terminal. That's a pretty good one!

How about a Queen Anne coop? Or maybe one made from Lincoln Logs? What endless possibilities!

Bah! Go all Big Dig on the chix and make a tunnel for them. Open up the land for the green space and make your own Rose Kennedy Greenway.

I'm still laughing my butt off at the idea of Lincoln Logs and the Big Dig. Chickens are smart and social animals...hmmm...

you have GOT to do Scarpa! Revel in the connection points of dissimmilar details. I can only imagine how Scarpa would detail the negative space and give the cickens the stairs to go up and down ...

oooh! speaking of stairs ... *breathlessly* Escher ... yessssss!

In reality, Xtine's idea of using used materials is Ak-tually what will probably happen. I'm planning to wreck the Existing and build the Future using the old what-ever-we-got-left-over gambit. The wire we use will have to be new. I've got fence posts and other stuff. In today's market what you don't have to buy is good. We even have some used 5-V left from the old barn. Cool huh? Southern red-neck chic. (chick?)
